How our sizing works

A duvet cover panel is a single panel, not a traditional two-sided duvet cover. One panel goes on top, one goes underneath, and a recessed zipper joins them to the down duvet along the full perimeter. Two duvet cover panels and one down duvet make the complete three-piece duvet system.

Because the panels zip to the duvet rather than enclosing it, they are made for our down duvet and only our down duvet. They will not fit an insert from another brand.

Our down duvet does have corner loops in addition to the recessed perimeter zipper, so it can be used inside another brand's duvet cover, the traditional envelope style. In that case you lose the ease and the no shifting that the three-piece duvet system gives you. We built it that way so you could still use a duvet cover you already love, even as a backup, if you choose.

Every panel fits every panel

The zipper flange is identical on every panel we make, so within a size, any panel works with any other panel.

There is no dedicated top and no dedicated bottom. Either panel can take either position on the duvet, so a mark on the cover panel goes underneath tonight and the whole bed looks new. Colors mix freely, and so do styles, which means you can run a Classic on top for the hemmed border and an Essential underneath, or the reverse.

The one rule is size. A Queen / Full panel pairs with a Queen / Full duvet, and a King / Cal King panel pairs with a King / Cal King duvet. Everything else is yours to decide.

When we build a system for you, the bottom is always an Essential panel. Put two Classics together and the bottom hem can hang a touch lower than the top one, so you catch a sliver of the panel underneath. An Essential on the bottom keeps that edge clean. Plenty of people want the sliver, especially running two colors on purpose, and if that is you, build your own with a Classic on both sides, or Essentials.  

This is also why you can refresh one panel instead of replacing a set. A single panel is a new bed, and the two you already own still work with it.

Finished dimensions

*Classic includes a 2.5” hemmed edge. Zipper flange dimensions are the same as the insert to ensure fit.

**Essential panel dimensions are mitered edge to mitered edge. Fabric extends beyond this into the zipper gusset and does not add to finished size.

Pillow shams

*Finished dimensions include a 2” trim edge around the perimeter. The enclosed area is 4” shorter in both width and length, so match the enclosed dimension to your pillow.

The half inch between them is deliberate. The Classic duvet cover panel carries a 2.5” trim edge, the pillow sham carries 2”. Side by side you would not spot the difference, which is the point. A sham holds a much smaller, lighter form, and a wider border there goes loose and floppy instead of sitting crisp against the pillow. Each edge is cut for what it has to hold.

Why the two panel numbers differ

Both panels cover the same duvet. They differ in how the edge is finished, so the number on the spec sheet differs too.

The Classic panel carries a 2.5” hemmed edge that sits outside the covering area. It reads larger because of that border, and it changes how the bed looks, not how the pieces fit.

The Essential panel is measured mitered corner to mitered corner, which comes to the same number as the down duvet, 90” x 94” in Queen / Full. The extra fabric you would find with a tape measure wraps around into the recessed zipper gusset, so it adds nothing to width or length.

Either way, the part covering your duvet is the size of your duvet, and the zipper flange underneath is the same on both, which is what lets them pair with each other.

Queen / Full and King / Cal King

Each size covers two mattress sizes, which is standard across the category. On a full you get a fuller side drape than on a queen. Because our three pieces are made to perfectly fit with one another, they all read that split the same way, which is not something you can count on when the duvet cover and the insert come from different brands.

Why we publish finished dimensions
